"If you like.........try......."

When I was at the library today asking about SEP's new book one of the librarians started suggesting other authors she thought I'd like - and she was right - I've read books by all of the writers she suggested. So I thought perhaps we could get a bit of a list together of books/authors that might share similarities. I know Julie recently mentioned that Linda Castillo reminded her of Karen Rose so I thought maybe we could expand on that and do a list for lots of different authors. I also remember that others have asked for recommendations on books of a certain theme (mail order brides was one - from Lee I think). So, with the varied tastes we have on this board we should be able to build up quite a list. I'll start the ball rolling with a few. If you like Susan Elizabeth Phillips you might like books by the following authors: Jennifer Crusie Rachel Gibson Susan Andersen Susan Donovan Linda Francis Lee Christie Ridgway If you like Regencies/Historicals with a dash of humour try the following: Julia Quinn Jillian Hunter Anne Gracie Kasey Michaels If you like books with a sporting connection check out books by: Susan Elizabeth Phillips Deirdre Martin Rachel Gibson Kasey Michaels Kate Angell Enough from me for now - does anyone else have any recommendations? LAST EDITED ON Jan-19-07 AT 11:32 AM (EST) I would find it difficult to stick to just mentioning an author in most cases because so many authors write so many different kinds of Genres these days. I have some to add to the Romantic Suspense category. Carla Neggers Brenda Novak Karen Robards Linda Howard I could also add - if you like Brenda Novak try ............ if I could just think who it is she reminds me of So any Brenda Novak readers out there? All the time I was reading Dead Silence I kept thinking that she reminded me of another author but I just can't put my finger on who it is. I've noticed some people here like Nascar so I can throw a couple of authors into a Nascar category. Pamela Britton Roxanne St Clair Joan "Smile - it's contagious" |

LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-07 AT 00:00 AM (EST) Leigh when I think about similarities it's about the style or the type of book that the author writes. If, for example, I'm in the mood for a contemporary that has humour, fun characters, great dialogue, I'll choose something from the authors who I know write that kind of book like SEP, Rachel Gibson etc. If I'm looking for murder/mystery to go with the romance then it's usually a different group - say Elizabeth Lowell, Karen Robards, Carla Neggers. That's why I'm always looking for author recommendations that might match up with the style of another person who writes in that genre because I like to keep adding new authors to my reading list. Leigh, What it sounds like is you are very comfortable out of your "Comfort Zone". Most of us have particular tastes for entertainment. We may enjoy tear jerking romance, or action packed sleuthing or whatever..... we definitely wouldn't like to be surprised with a Predator or a Full Metal Jacket if we thought it was going to be a Romance.... Also, it is not just the content, it's how it's done. The Author becomes sort of like the Director...if you see what I mean. They tell you the story in a certain way. If you like the style you will look for other books by that Author but there are only so many. Now you need to branch out. Rec's can help you find those particular styles. I love quirky humor, if Joan says ----- writes like J. Quinn there is a good bet I'm going to like it because I love JQ. Capeshi? Mickey "Forget about it" |

I will be back with my list, but to answer the question of "why" books sometimes bring to mind other authors, is for the same reasons as others have said. You have a comfort zone, or a favorite author, and when you see a similar writing style, or progression of characters, it might bring to mind yoru favorite. For example, Sharon Sala/Dinah McCall remind me of Catherine in style. Cherry Adair and Lucy Monroe remind me of Suzanne Brockmann writing style wise..character smart remark wise, etc Kristie, Troy's wife(88) momma to Jordan(8-31-90 - 9-14-90), Brooke(91) and Cody, aka the Codeman(94) |

Sara Beth, I keep hearing people saying they love Jude since the KISA post went up. Before then however, I don't think anyone mentioned her since I've been posting on the board. Isn't that odd???? Well I for one am really happy to meet some fellow JD fans. I think I'll put up a discussion post for us. Mickey "Forget about it" |

If you like silly fun old movies from the 50's try Jillian Hunter. I read the book club selection for January "Seduction of an English Scoundrel" and enjoyed it immensely. I kept thinking this reminds me of the Old Doris Day/Rock Hudson movies. Not that it had anything to do with one of them. It was more like the type of humor that was portrayed. Light and very entertaining. Now I'm reading "Daring" and I can see this is her style. Her Characters are reminding me of Katherine Hepburn/Cary Grant in Bringing up baby. Again the book has nothing to do with that, it is the characters who remind me of this movie. Her humor is very silly yet entertaining and warm. Great for a light read. Mickey "Forget about it" |
