"SPOILER.....Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.....SPOILER"
 |
LAST EDITED ON Dec-19-06 AT 02:15 PM (EST) Christy,You wanted my opinion, which sometimes isn't very good. You know I'm not a big regency fan. Actually, I REALLY enjoyed Colin and Penelope's story. Colin was a great guy. I felt about him throughout the story the way he felt about himself. He was looking for a purpose. He was a very nice guy. He was rich, therefore he didn't have to work, and could just travel all over the world at the drop of a hat. That worked out very well since, had he not traveled, he probably would have given in to his mother's wishes and "settled" on someone he didn't really love and then Penelope would have been a spinster the rest of her life. I'm glad Colin was smart enough to look on the inside of Penelope instead of just the outer package. She was a sweet lady and very smart. One of my favorite parts of the book was when Colin was asking Penelope's mother for her hand in marriage and the mother just couldn't believe he wanted to marry Penelope instead of her sister. She kept trying to send Penelope out of the room so Colin could talk to Felecity (I think). I wanted to smack the lady for thinking so poorly of her daughter. I admired Colin for the way he stood up to his future mother-in-law. I was happy for Colin when he finally had enough confidence to publish his works. He probably wouldn't have done that without Penelope's urging. I'm glad she gave him the confidence he needed so that he could find the "purpose" in life he was looking for. All in all, I really enjoyed the story. I honestly can't say that I will go buy the rest in the series (I will read the bookclub selection), but it's not because I didn't enjoy the book, simply because I prefer westerns instead of regency. This was a nice change of pace for me and if I see more by Julia Quinn at the bookmobile or library, I will probably pick them up to read. Rest easy, Christy. Colin is a great guy, but I'll let you keep him. I still love my cowboys best! Mary

Oh, Mary!!! You crack me up!!!! I'm glad you really did like Colin...and even more glad I get to keep him!!!! I love everything you said about the book...all of those parts still stand out to me as well. But my MOST favorite thing about the whole book was the ending. That's my favorite ending of ALL books I've ever read!!! Loved the drama of it!!! The way he stood up in front of the entire ton and proclaimed his love for his, shall we say, multi-personality wife. I remember the first time I read the book, I was lying in bed and as the ending unfolded, I had to sit up because it was just getting so exciting!!! LOL...that scene just really came to life for me! I could go on and on and on...and have before, lol...but I'll stop right now. I guess it's safe to say that Colin and all of the Bridgertons are forever a part of my heart! BTW...what did you think of JQ's writing? Her humor? She is the wittiest author I've ever read... Christy |

I loved the ending, too! The support of the family was wonderful. I guess being a very rich part of the "ton" has it's advantages also. And YES, I did like Julia Quinn's witty humor. I noticed it right away in the first few pages, how she would put little bits of humor in parenthesis (did I spell that right?? ). JQ is a great author. Thanks for suggesting her. If I hadn't heard so many good things about the Bridgerton's on this board, I probably would have never picked up on of her regency books. I am a little curious about Daphne..... She took off at the end of the story when she was supposed to be sticking to Penelope "like glue" and wasn't mentioned again. I'm assuming there is a man behind her mystery. Am I right? Thanks for suggesting the book, Christy! Mary

Mary, I think you mean Eloise, not Daphne. Daphne is the sister whose home the party was being hosted in. She's married to Simon, the Duke of Hastings (LOL, help me out ya'll, it is Hastings, isn't it???) If you were reading the series in order, Eloise's story does follow Colin's story. I'll list the order for you: The Duke and I (Daphne's story) The Viscount Who Loved Me (Anthony's story) An Offer From a Gentleman (Benedict's story) Romancing Mister Bridgerton (Colin's story) To Sir Philip, With Love (Eloise's story) When He Was Wicked (Fransesca's story) It's In His Kiss (Hyacinth's story) On The Way to the Wedding (Gregory's story) Mary, I know you're in no hurry to read these, but if you want me to grab the books in this series at the ubs, I'll be glad to send them to you. Makes my heart happy to send the Bridgertons to others so that they may enjoy them as well, lol...between the 2 ubs in Tupelo, I think I can come up with most of these books. Just let me know! I love the ending as well, but my favorite part was when she asks him to kiss her while they were in the Drawing room. Talk about LOL. I loved both these characters from the first three books. When I first read RMB I started laughing from the first page. I felt sorry for Penelope from Anthony's, and Benedicts story. The scene from TVWLM when Cressida was picking on her, made me want to cry. I was so glad she finally got to "give it back to her". And it was Colin who did it for her...sigh,sigh, sigh........ When he starts seeing her in a different light and suddenly thinks she's beautiful!...sigh..... Who doesn't want a man who looks at all your flaws and sees love and beauty only...... Ok Christy, I know he's yours......(I can fantasize, can't I)LOL... Mary, you really should give "The Duke and I" a chance. From what you wrote I think it would appeal to you. (besides, Christy wouldn't let me have Colin, so Simon was my next choice)this is his story. Also, if you choose to read the rest I have an extra copy of an Offer From a Gentleman" (don't ask, it's a sickness). LOL//lol I used to be like you, for years I would only read certain Genres. I would not read a contemp for anything, no way no how. Then I discovered Judith McNaught. I loved her so much I took a chance on one of hers "Paradise". Needless to say it was one of the best books I've ever read. I'm still very choosy when I walk out of the realm of Historical, but I will read them now. I would have missed a lot of good books if I didn't take a walk on the "Wild Side". My favorite Western/Indian writers: Anything by Johanna Lindsey the "McKensie Series" by Heather Graham (Great) Elizabeth Lowell Vintage Judith Devereaux (Mountain Laurel is one of my favorites books) Mickey Mickey "Forget about it" |

Okay, gals, you have talked me into reading more. You twisted my arm. I will be on the lookout for "The Duke and I" at my next UBS trip. Ooops--I did mean Eloise instead of Daphne--just got the names mixed up a bit. Christy, thank you so much for the offer of finding and sending me the books. I really do appreciate it, but I'm pretty sure I can find them at my UBS here. I even have some store credit and books to trade. About the other authors--I LOVE Johanna Lindsey--even her regency. At one time, she was my all time favorite author and I bought every new book she published. These days, I wait for paperback on her books. Carol Finch--I have never read anything by her I will put her on my list. Thanks for the suggestions. Happy reading!

Once you are up to The Viscount who loved me. If you haven't found an offer from a gentleman, let me know. Like I said, I have an extra copy. I am famous for buying books I already read. If they are on the overstock shelves in my UBS they are only a dollar or at the library they are only $.50. I get so excited when I see one of my authors I just buy buy buy ...LOL As for J. Lindsey, she is still one of my absolute favorite authors. And her westerns....sigh... Angel/Chandos/Chase how is a girl to decide??????? OK, it's Angel, when he sneaks in her bedroom and asks her if they are still married, then "plunges into her as soon as she says yes"!!!!!Oh---My---God".....(hot Flash...whew) Oh wait I forgot about Hank. Oh yeah, it's definitely Hank. Seriously, give Heather Graham a try. She is now into suspense, but her historicals were mostly South/South West. The McKensie series is about a family that is half Muskogee Indian/half Scotts. The first two books are about half brothers one all white the other a half breed during the Seminole Indian wars. The rest of the series is about their children during the civil war. Really a great series. Mickey Mickey "Forget about it" |

LAST EDITED ON Dec-22-06 AT 11:04 AM (EST) I wish I could say I only read it twice. I've read all her books more times than I can count. She is my favorite. The Character you are looking for from Savage Thunder was Colt (White) Thunder. He was Jesse's brother and married Jocelyn. And yes, it was a great book. If this is your favorite of JL's westerns you will definitely love the "McKensie" books. The second one is about the half breed brother who falls for a "White Woman". A rich southern belle to be precise. It is very similar to "White Thunder" He swears off white woman, and is always trying to leave her....... yet always comes back..... It is a great read. The major difference is they are in the middle of a war, with the army trying to hunt down all Seminole Indians and her father is a Colonel in the Army. The name of the book is "Captive". I'm trying to remember the 1st book about his brother. If you are interested I'll get back to you. Mickey

Ah, yes, COLT, how could I forget? The other books you are talking about sound really good. I'll check out the website, if she has one, and see what I can find out. Just what I need...a new author to fall in love with and add more books to my never ending, always growing TBR pile. Mary |

You don't know the half of it. There are four or five authors that I have every single book for: Judith McNaught Johanna Lindsey Jude Deveraux Julia Quinn Amanda Quick/krentz Heather Graham has written so many books I have never completely got all of them yet, the books I do have far surpasses any of the others. I even took her out of my book shelf because there were too many. I have three piles up to my thighs in my closet!!!!! However, her Mckensie series is only about 6 or 7 books. I think you will love this series. She is constantly reinventing her writing phases. So you may not want to read every single book she has written. Right now she is into Romantic/Suspense. I really like her writing so much I'll read anything she writes. Mickey Mickey "Forget about it" |
